One shouldn't expect a happy ending when reading a book about two teenagers with a terminal illness falling in love. Regardless, I don't recommend reading this in public.
It's a coming of age tale, sped up by the potential of a short life. A look into the thoughts and feelings of people who feel the end near, thus focus on the things which are important to them. Incredible story that haunted me for weeks after I finished it. The Fault in Our Stars is, without a doubt, one of the best books I've ever read, in YA or adult fiction.
