Several friends read this book and rated it highly so my expectations were set accordingly. It took me two tries to get past chapter 1; once I did, the story built slowly like the current of the region's waters, traversed without a motor. It seems the cultural and literary transference finally rose to a level where I could connect with the characters, follow the narration, and root for someone.
