This started off slow for me and I almost abandoned it but I am SO glad I didn't. I can't stop thinking about it. Probably a 4.5 for me. Love the peak into the work of anthropologists in the 1930s. So well written.

This was a great book to discuss with a bookclub, and overall I am glad we chose it. The thing I enjoyed the most about the book was the evocation of New Guinea. King is a talented author and made me feel the heat, the mosquitoes, and the jungle (and she managed to do so without long-winded descriptions, always a bonus). The things I didn't like about the book were the abrupt beginning and just generally how the book ended. But I did enjoy the middle portion of the book, the plot drew m ...more

Several friends read this book and rated it highly so my expectations were set accordingly. It took me two tries to get past chapter 1; once I did, the story built slowly like the current of the region's waters, traversed without a motor. It seems the cultural and literary transference finally rose to a level where I could connect with the characters, follow the narration, and root for someone.
