"What's the point in solving murders if we're all going to die soon anyway?" That's the opening line of the blurb for The Last Policeman. And after having finished it I'm not sure I can answer that question. Perhaps that's just what you do when you know an asteroid is going to hit the earth in 8 months? You keep doing your job?

In the end, I like this book "ok". The mystery being solved was a wee bit thin, but Hank Palace was a great character. Appropriately introspective in the face of imminent

Wasn't sure if I was going to like this one but I really did. A quiet, melancholy take on what would happen if the world was going to end in 6 months and how people would deal day to day. In the midst of that Detective Henry Palace is just trying to do his job and solve cases. ...more

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge- Sci Fi pick.

Definitely not my usual genre, but I really enjoyed this book. So much in fact, I think I will read the other two in the trilogy!

I can't help but a love an apocalyptic (in this case *almost* post-apocalyptic) novel. And a detective novel to boot? Sounds almost too good to be true and I was apprehensive about reading this - I just didn't want to be disappointed. But I needn't have worried. Amazingly enough there's a sequel (or 2?) and I'm looking forward to reading more about Henry and his quest for justice and even a little normalcy in his rapidly changing world. ...more

Very solid mystery in a doomed world, and how that doom impacts the mystery is really fascinating to me. When the world is about to end (giant asteroid), what does "justice" mean? And there's a lot of quiet philosophy that got me thinking but without hitting me over the head. The mystery got solved at the end but doom is still approaching.
