Probably a 3.5 star rating? But I'm unwilling to click that fourth star.
I've been reading Stephen King since I was like 12. I have a vivid memory of reading Different Seasons while I was babysitting and freaking myself OUT alone in a house with two little kids sleeping. I remember reading The Stand in bed, and that is a big ass book to try to hold onto in a bed. He is probably the single author whose books I've read the most of - except for Shakespeare. Isn't that interesting?

Read it on a train ride down to Virginia. Has a lot of the elements of later-life Stephen King: aging protagonist reminiscing over a life, build up to a showdown, and otherworldly elements superimposed on our world. And while it was better than a lot of Stephen King, it was not as good as others. All in all, just a middle of the road King book.

(Full disclosure, I'm Stephen King's #1 Fan.)
Every since Duma Key, there has been a gradual shift for Stephen King's books from the outright macabre, to the more ambiguous and harder to define, supernatural. His later books aren't necessarily gentler, but they have an almost dream-like quality to them, even when describing something that could potentially be horrifying. Knowing what I know about Mr. King, I would say this book is about as close to an autobiography as we are going to get from him ...more

This is one of those books that, I can't tell if it started to drag three quarters of the way through because of the book or because my life got in the way. Either way, I didn't find it as engrossing or as all-out freaky as a lot of Stephen King.

As a general rule, I love Stephen King... seriously. But this one seemed rushed, without the full character development I expect from King. And it was dark.... but dark in the way that doesn't allow for any hope or redemption. As it mounted towards the climax, I was certainly enthralled but this was definitely not one of my favorites!
