This was a great book -- funny, moving, unexpected; ruminative and thought-provoking; propulsive and filled with incident; beautiful in both writing, content, and structure. I don't know why I left it to languish on my TBR pile for so long, but if it has similarly languished on yours, I can't recommend enough that you pull it out next. You won't regret it.

Seemed like a slow starter, but it really picked up and completely hit a sweet spot for me in terms of going to Catholic school and the regrets of adulthood.

Edit: Huh, people disliked it for thinking it was supposed to be funny? Wow. There's some comedy, but this is more of a tragedy to me.

I had mixed feeling about this book. I love the setting- a Catholic Dorm School for boys in Ireland. And some of the characters are also fun- most of them are 14 years old boys- the nerds, the so called womanizer, the bullies, etc. The mystery surrounding Skippy's life - including why he dies- is also intriguing. But the plot - like most British lits - is quite slow and dragging. And also, the subplot about the lives of the teachers (and most adults in this book) is pretty lame. So... 3 stars, i ...more
