I really, really wanted to like this book. No: I wanted to love it the way that I loved Fun Home, but I couldn't. The author's own process kept getting in the way of the story, and her process was the story. In Fun Home, she used a rather circular narrative structure that revealed something new with each revelation, with each hover around the main event: her father's suicide and his secret homosexual affairs with young men.

so so so good!
Ok, so I'm a person with a degree in clinical psychology who has also done her fair share of her own therapy and reading of Adrienne Rich and Virgina Woolf. And I'm queer. So clearly I've got some predisposition to like this book (not to mention a huge fan of Fun Home, and appreciative of Dykes to Watch out For). That said, this book goes above and beyond.
Bechdel amazes me with her ability to synthesize the work of Freud and Winnicott, other psychologists/analysts, poets, novelist ...more

Ostensibly about Bechdel's mom, but much more about her own psyche. I had trouble getting into the use of old school psychoanalysts' theories as a frame for this book.
