The basic premise of this first book in the Throne of Glass series is that Celaena, a young but well-trained assassin, has been taken from her slave prison and chosen to be a competitor in the King's competition. Winner gets their freedom.... eventually. After they spend 4 years working as the King's personal assassin. Some of the competitors are going to be pretty hard for Celaena to beat, but luckily there's also a mysterious beast roaming the castle, killing them off.
