At that moment, beauty itself struck me as a kind of painful melancholy
I was in Waterstones the other day when i noticed they now have a section, adjacent to the Biography section, called Painful Lives, full of the sorts of books that i find it incredibly hard to like. The fact that this style of writing had entire shelf dedicated to it is, to me, a bad thing. I mean, those people who really have painful lives don't get a chance to write about it...

I don't think the geisha life is for me. I'm already too pale. It seems like these gals had to make the best of having an old sugar daddy. Yuck.
