I was a little leery about reading this book, but was pleasantly surprised by the author and his tasteful handling of a potentially obscene subject matter. The "memoir" begins in a poor fishing village in 1929 Japan where nine-year-old Nitta Sayuri is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a geisha house.
