I was a little leery about reading this book, but was pleasantly surprised by the author and his tasteful handling of a potentially obscene subject matter. The "memoir" begins in a poor fishing village in 1929 Japan where nine-year-old Nitta Sayuri is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a geisha house. Read this book before seeing the movie. It's well worth it. You really feel like you're in that world, you can feel the silk kimonos, smell the fish in the fishing town, you may even drop a tear or two with the characters as they search for love and acceptance. I loved it.
