This book blew me away. I wasn't expecting it. I hadn't really paid much attention to the hype. I just needed a good audio book, and when I saw that the audio version of this one was read by the author, I was intrigued. Then I started listening. The story felt so real, like the author had lived through it himself. That's when I did a little background research, and realized that this was semi-autobiographical. Wow! I read this book in conjunction with a group of 6th/7th grade students reading it for a literature class. Unlike many of the students, I could relate to Junior. Junior is a bright high school student who leaves the reservation to go to the white high school in a nearby town. I'm a big fan of Sherman Alexie's writing and the fact that this is billed for Young Adults makes me glad his work will have a broader reach.
This novel, like many of his stories, has memorable vignettes that I will remember. Not nearly as dark as "Flight," but has a similar depth into the portrait of a young man who has feelings and motivations that give one pause and, at times, admiration.
It does have a quality, especially at the beginning, that made me wonder if I wanted to keep reading. Not ...more
