Cute! Yes, I definitely get the Doctor Who-Sherlock mashup vibe that Maricel and Selah have mentioned! Loved Jenny and Douglas the duck! The identity of the villain was a bit predictable, but not his/her origins, so that's okay.
Weird side note: I went to college at UofO in Eugene, OR. While I was reading Jackaby, the name Hatun was niggling me for some reason, and then when we meet her character for the first time, I realized why: she is based on a real person, an older homeless woman that is s ...more

Good story idea, and I like the supernatural Holmes/Watson vibe, but Abigail - as narrator - didn't sound to me like an English teenager from the 1890s who had been planning to attend University. She didn't sound all that different from Jackaby or Charlie or Jenny which made her less fleshed out as a character. We are told that she reads a lot, but don't see it. (Much of the book felt like an old Jasper Fforde manuscript with a veneer of Harry Potter, an interesting combination).

But much later I try again (in a more tolerant mood) and find the book really quite a lot of fun. Don't feel very attached to the characters, knew who the villain was long in advance (but not why) and still enjoyed it. ...more

If Sherlock Holmes were a Watcher in the Buffy-universe... Fun. A very good driving book.
