This was an interesting beginning to a series, set in alt universe where an outbreak of supernatural powers (mostly related to spirits--mediums, augers, etc.) in the mid-1800s leads to a very different 21st century London. It felt a bit like the Philip Pullman Dark Materials series crossed with the Hunger Games. Paige Mahoney is a dream walker, which means she can basically enter others minds. As the novel begins, she is working with a criminal syndicate because in this world, those with superna

Here's my biggest issue with The Bone Season. I like learning about new worlds, and I don't mind if it takes a little while for me to actually understand the world, but the author really takes for granted that the readers know basically nothing about the world of Scion.
The use of slang, of which there is a lot, is so confusing. There's a glossary in the back of the book just to explain it all - not a good sign. Add to that the new world of Sheol I, and the Rephaim creatures, and you've got a co ...more

I liked parts of this, but I have a hard time with the main premise. Why is Paige fighting so hard to go home to where her life is in danger? I felt like the author did a poor job in making this believable. It feels like there is no where safe for her, so why does it matter where she is? The voyant parts were cool, but this one glaring problem kept rearing it's ugly head.
This is supposed to be a 7 book series, but I'm not sure if I'll return for book 2. If the author doesn't do a better job wit ...more

Gave this one a good try, but it just didn't appeal. I found it too confusing. It seemed to have too many elements thrown together to really make a cohesive whole.
