So in the beginning it was, well what is that, what are these words, how am I suppose to know what's happening with this many made-up words!? Then I couldn't figure out who was really the main character and what was happening.

Then Chronicler came in & it started to make sense.

I love Rothfuss's writing, it was sometimes very much fantasy/celtic & often very modern with superb barbs, 'I hear you three times' & 'You lack the requisite spine & testicular fortitude to study under me'. & 'To deem us So in the beginning it was, well what is that, what are these words, how am I suppose to know what's happening with this many made-up words!? Then I couldn't figure out who was really the main character and what was happening.

It was more like the two of us entered into a business partnership in order to more efficiently pursue our mutual interest of hating each other.' & 'Music is a proud, temperamental mistress. Give her the time and attention she deserves, and she is yours. Slight her and there will come a day when you call and she will not answer.'

Once I started getting a feel for the mythology of the world with everything having a 'name' and Kvothe and his antics and learning at the University, I kept thinking, this is a lot like Earthsea. But I was really glad that Kvothe's twists/turns were very different from Sparrowhawks, though still a familiar tale.

'So Taborlin fell, but he did not despair. For he knew the name of the wind, and so the wind obeyed him.' [Ok, literally I started counting the number of times 'name of the wind' was mentioned in the book then had to stop because it was really racking up]

Elodin & Kvothe and the 'will he teach him won't he part' was insanity. Obviously, It made sense Kvothe was going to need to study Naming under Elodin because he wanted to know the name of the wind [coming back to the title, always, in this one] but then this happened instead:
'As I lay there, counting my blessings & broken ribs, Elodin stepped into my field of vision. 'Congratulations, that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Ever'. And that is when I decided to pursue the noble art of artificing.' Loved it.

I have no idea how I read this book in 6 days, but Rothfuss/Kvothe kept ending certain chapters with cryptic thoughts about how much he underestimated Ambrose, when Ambrose decided to kill him, and then that bombshell, Ambrose did get him kicked out, oh no he just did, no wait he didn't, but he later? Driving me insane, so I couldn't really stop reading. H-O-O-K-E-D. Like the best books really get us.

There were times that I started to drift when reading about Kvothe's poverty, his cleverness, Ambrose, Denna & the Chandrian but each subject would get a respite from/for another that I think that made it all work. I'm very intrigued by the over all plot of three books, three days (Ye, Gods a lot happened on that first day, didn't it?) hopefully finding out something concrete about the Chandrian & this king killing business in the end. ...more

Like many books I have, waiting for me to read them, I wish I had done so earlier.
Wonderful storytelling. I wasn't sure what to expect but was happy with what I found.

Le nom du vent est le premier tome de la trilogie de fantasy Chronique du tueur de Roi de Patrick Rothfuss. Publié par les Editions Bragelonne, cette belle brique de 800 pages est en vente à 25,00€. Sachez que si 3 trois sont déjà parus en France, c’est parce que le second tome a été coupé en deux afin que le livre ne soit pas trop lourd. Le tome 3 n’est, à ce jour, pas paru en France (ni en VO).

Ce premier tome raconte l’histoire de Kvothe, de son enfance à ses 16 ans. Kvothe est un personnage très complexe. Nous le rencontrons d’abord adulte, sous le prénom de Kote, tenancier d’une auberge dans un petit village. C’est un personnage renfermé, sombre et mystérieux, sur qui on sent peser le poids de son passé. Mais jeune, Kvothe était curieux de tout, intelligent et parfois imprudent. En grandissant, on le découvre courageux, audacieux et téméraire, toujours intelligent, malin… mais aussi entêté et obstiné bien que cela puisse aussi passer pour de la persévérance selon le domaine. Kvothe n’a pas eu la vie facile et il raconte son histoire avec honnêteté. Si le Kvothe adulte semble inaccessible, nous nous attachons rapidement au Kvothe enfant.
[Bon, la prononciation du prénom pour nous, lecteurs francophones, est quelque-peu laborieuse (merci réverso !) mais on finit par s’y faire ^^]

Le roman est une belle brique longue à lire car le roman n’est pas écrit si gros que ça et que ce grand format nous propose de grandes pages pleines d’écritures. Avant l’arrivée à l’université de Kvothe, les dialogues sont peu nombreux et nous avons le droit à de bonnes pages de narration. Celles-ci pourraient facilement effrayer un lecteur non-assidu ou pas trop familier des romans aussi épais. Pourtant, bien qu’elles ne se tournent pas vite, ces pages se dévorent avec plaisir. Malgré son nombre important de pages qui pourraient faire croire à des longueurs, je ne me suis pas du tout ennuyée en le lisant. L’écriture est très agréable et l’auteur sait comment nous laisser en haleine, en nous donnant des bouts d’éléments futurs qui intriguent le lecteur. Genre « je ne pouvais pas savoir à cette époque que j’allais faire telle chose ensuite… ». Oui, il m’a fallu deux semaines pour lire ce roman mais j’ai vraiment eu un petit coup de cœur pour ce livre qui m’a captivé.

J’ai adoré et dévoré encore plus rapidement le livre quand Kvothe arrive à l’université. Les idées de l’auteur sont complexes mais fascinantes. J’ai beaucoup apprécié son idée de la magie/du sympathisme, très complexe mais très original. L’ambiance université, les rivalités, les amis, les ennemis etc… m’a conquise. Nous savons comment cela va finir, car le personnage nous le dit dès le début, mais nous sommes quand même captivés.

L’univers proposé par l’auteur est un monde de fantasy médiéval, un peu moyenâgeux mais que la magie améliore par rapport à notre propre moyen-âge. J’aime beaucoup cette atmosphère à l’ancienne. La magie n’est pas le point culminant du livre. Pour le moment, elle n’y prend qu’une petite place. Présente et essentielle, mais pas spectaculaire comme dans Harry Potter.

Conclusion

Ce roman est une petite pépite qui se dévore lentement et avec plaisir. Les amateurs de fantasy seront nombreux à être conquis par la vie de Kvothe. La magie est au rendez-vous, les péripéties aussi mais l’épopée et la renommée qui en ressortira n’ont pas encore véritablement commencé. Cette première journée d’histoire s’achève en nous laissant sur notre faim et j’ai hâte de commencer la première partie du second tome pour découvrir les mésaventures de notre héros ! Un roman très bien écrit et qui saura séduire de nombreux lecteurs ! ...more
