A decent story. Interesting bits of Dutch history and discriptions of color and the painting process. Overall, I felt like the reader was shielded from the true emotion of the story, just as Griet attempted to shield her thoughts from the Vermeer family. There are rare glimpses of real character through Griet's first person narrative, but the story would have benefited if the "cap" had been removed more often. ...more

This was an enjoyable book. I would consider it historical fiction. No one really knows who the girl in the painting is.
