This debut novel was wonderful! I laughed and cried, but mostly I wanted to be par for their lives.

Told in past and present, we learn the deepest secrets of two women who seem to be different in every single way. A lovely novel, I thought of it for days after.

This book is utterly lacking in nuance. It might be good for YA and/or adults who don't really know much about race relations in the US. ...more

Dramatic and somewhat moving. I think I have become cynical with these types of novels. I appreciate what the author is trying to do, but the characters and plot didn't ring as true for me as other works this one is compared to, such as The Help. ...more

It is an easy read about an inter racial relationship in the early 40s.... Some twists and turns. I laughed and cried and enjoyed a few afternoons with it.

Exquisitely written and crafted story about life relationships, choices, and social consequences both today and southern USA in the late thirties. I loved the characters in this story and the tears are still flowing after finishing it. Why had I not heard of this book until now? I am so glad I read this for
book club.
