The story starts out exceptionally slow, and in fact the entire book seems to be about getting to know the characters, as a sort of preamble to the real adventure that presumably happens in the next two books of the trilogy.

This isn't a bad thing as such – I've long held that it's okay if nothing happens in your book as long as it doesn't happen in an interesting fashion, and the character studies of Logen Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar and especially Sand dan Glokta are sufficiently entertaining ...more

Very disappointing. I was really looking forward to this after all the wonderful things I'd heard, but whilst it has some fascinatingly interesting characters, they're all stuck in a boring story.

It's a book that does nothing but serve to push audiences into the second book in the trilogy. Thing is, ironically, all that does is push me away from reading anything more.

Books in a trilogy need to have a story that allows them to stand of their own. The Blade Itself gets the Fellowship together, but ...more
