A delightful novel. Never has John Irving flown so high to teach us how to write a novel. You cannot help but fall in love with almost all of its characters; the idealist/realist Dr. Larch and his devoted nurses, the St. Cloud's orphans, the women who seeked attention and comfort at the orphanage, and most of all Homer Wells, the former orphan and future doctor of the institution.
