Well, I made it through this slugfest and the experience was very much like eavesdropping on a rambling old man in the next room who expounds on everything and, every once in great while, says something mildly witty. I'm assuming that this is a highly regarded piece of literature because Mantel puts some pretty sentences together. As for the entertainment factor? I didn't find much.

Shelves: historical
a very slow read. and difficult to get into. The different approach to the Tudor historical era's story was refreshing if somewhat of a long read. ...more

I enjoyed this book more on this second reading. The audio book was enjoyable but I found myself wanting to check the charts in the physical book. 4.5 Stars for me

When I watched the TV series The Tudors I got the impression that Thomas More was a good guy and Thomas Cromwell not so much. Then I read this excellent historical novel and come away with exactly the opposite impression. So I wonder which is the more historically accurate. My bet is on the novel I think.

Henry the VIII England from a different perspecitve. Thomas Cromwall, a citizen, was loyal to Bishop Wosley. When Wosley falls out of favor, Cromwall manages to become an advisor to the King.
