Well....going to have to add another book to my to read list! I have to know what happens next! I could not put this book down once I got to about page 200. I forgot how much I loved reading about vampires and add daemons and witches to the mix! Whew! I hope that Diana is a little more careful in the next book and not so reckless. I was not very fond of Matthew's mother at first but I grew to like her nearer to the end of the book. I thought that the Bishop house was so neat when it kept adding

I owned A Discovery of Witches for 4 years before I started it, mostly because I didn't want to commit to starting a trilogy. I loved it for the most part. Professor/witch on sabattical at Oxford studying the history of alchemy discovers lost magical text. Meets vampire. Falls in love with vampire. Witch's life is threatened by discovery of said magical text and what it means for the underground world of magical creatures. I enjoyed the book and will certainly read on in the series. I really wanted to like this book. But 100 pages in, I just have to admit that I loathe the main characters enough to stop reading. The writing is fine, if overly descriptive (I don't care to read multiple pages in just the first few chapters about yoga and rowing and running and drinking tea) and I did like some of the major themes—witches, vampires, daemons, libraries, a mysterious book, alchemy.
