Man, what a creepy mystery. I really liked Evie as a character and how she is loyal, even when she doesn't want to be. The final confrontation is terrifying.
There were enough questions answered to be satisfying, and enough loose ends left over to make me eager for the sequel. I'm still not sure why Evie got to stay, and I don't know why her parents thought it was a good idea for such a troublemaker to go to NYC in the FIRST PLACE, but in a story where damn near everyone has magical powers I gue ...more

This hulking book requires the reader to keep track of many characters and story lines, a task sometimes made difficult due to the lack of well developed, fully fleshed out characters. Will and Jericho in particular seem to serve more as vessels of information than realistic characters.
This is an ambitious book, particularly considering it's supposed to be YA lit. I struggle to picture the teen who would be willing to slog through close to 600 pages of 20's slang and pop culture, mysticism, reli ...more

I just finished reading The Diviners, by Libba Bray. I have read a lot of books every year, but I have to say that this young adult novel is special. It’s set in the roaring 1920s (which I loved reading about), the protagonist is a flapper, and there are enough creepy supernatural things going on to keep you up at night. (With a flashlight and a blanket over your head.) The time period was clearly well researched, and the details were rich without being overly done.

Rereading, in anticipation of the new book! I can't believe it's been 3years!
I see that some reviewers are mentioning the daunting length of this novel. Since I've started reading everything on my Ipad I find that I don't even notice length - it was nearly over when I realized it was 600 pages long!
I loved this book! I want to recommend it to everyone, particularly to readers who (like me) are wary of anything with the Young Adult label. The story has complexity and the characters have depth - ...more

3.75 is how I'm feeling about this one.
This is definitely a story for the patient, observant reader. With many characters and stories going on simultaneously this is a novel that really takes some concentration to keep straight. In the last hundred pages I was reading and still found myself here and there going 'and who is this again?' and would have to pause and think about it for a bit. Due to this thought you have to be patient, though all the stories cross paths at some point if you like the ...more

I liked this book. I had it on my to-read list for a long time and finally decided to read it a few weeks ago. It had a lot of supernatural aspects to it which is usually not something that I gravitate to when selecting books. It was set during prohibition and times of the speak easies in New York, which appeal to my love of historical fiction. I am considering reading the other books in the series to see how it wraps everything up. This book left me with lots of ideas about the main characters
