I really enjoyed this. It was the first real look I had into Queen Mary, and this was the first of Phillipa Gregory's books I read. She makes the Tudor queens and kings more human, with more vices and emotions than we usually attribute to them. Really interesting look into history.

I am generally opposed books that claim to be "historical fiction," as they seem to either ignore the historical record or be a history textbook with a narrator. I was pleasantly surprised both by the author's fantastic storytelling and her strict adherence to the record where it existed. All in all, I devoured the book in about 46 hours and will definitely read more of her work as light reading. :)
