What Members Thought

I know "The Road" is quite beloved, but I'm giving up on p. 10. I've talked to readers, who confirmed the obvious: it's not going to change much, and if I'm bored out of my mind now...

a beautiful brutal read. I had seen the film before I had read the book.
I am so glad I read this book , as Cormac McCarthy's writing style is a joy to read.
the relationship between the pa and son is touching & reassuring as they continue their walk across the country.
its a book that everyone should read , its a heartbreaking story that will leave an imprint that you'll never forget. ...more

So a man and his son survive the apocalypse and wander the broken road in search of some refuge. It was okay. Some parts were downright interesting but in the end I felt like the author had held back so much of the world from me that I couldn't really get into the story itself.

I've long been a fan of post-apocalyptic literature, particularly books that don't provide us with the wider viewpoint of what has happened and instead focus on the human reaction to it (for example, Alas, Babylon). It's in this vein that I found The Road compelling. We don't know what has happened, we only see how people are reacting to it, primarily through the eyes of a man and his son.

I've never read an apocalyptic tale like this one. Even though the two main characters are refered to as "the man" and "the boy" I cared for them and their struggle to survive almost more than any other character I've ever come across. There's so much emotion even though no one word of emotion is ever spoken between the two characters. I highly recommend this book, although this is not an emotionally-easy read, it is worth it.

This book is dark and distrubing but so, so amazing. This was the most important book I've read in years, by far. A father and son search for hope and humanity in a future where the Earth is suspended in a nuclear winter and the end of the human race seems inevitable. A hauntingly beautiful book that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.
