What Members Thought

I remember reading a review of this novel when it was first published and something about it made me add it to my want-to-read list. Probably I was feeling a bit of nostalgia for the state of Florida. Have never felt the least bit of homesickness and I never go back but sometimes a little reminder is in order. Florida is contrary to what a lot of people think a very diverse state. This work is very well written. The descriptions of the swamp are at times dazzling. The story line is a little thin

The two stars are for Russell's amazing prose. She has a great talent for surprising, unique description. I actually felt sticky and a bit itchy, as if I were in the humid, buggy Florida Everglades. Now if only there were a plot...

This book was so disappointing. And I hate ghost stories. This book was all about that and depressed me in every way. The Chief and Kiwi were horrible characters. The writing was redundant (the description of a "doll's black eyes" appeared at least twice). And the story arc came way too late and the whole thing was terribly unbelievable. I couldn't wait for it to end.u

I'm a fan of magical realism in general, and liked the first half of this book, but when the Bird Man shows up it all gets to be too much, maybe a little gimmicky, with an ending that doesn't seem to fit. Meh.
