Actually, I think I prefer Alcott's lesser-known books for young readers, such as EIGHT COUSINS (which I owned as child, tho had only abridged edition of LITTLE WOMEN), JACK & JILL, LITTLE MEN, JO'S BOYS and OLD-FASHIONED GIRL.

I have always wanted to read this book and the PBS Great American Read inspired me to finally read it and I was not disappointed. There is much more to the characters than I saw in the movie productions I have watched. I can see where this book has passed the test of time. Alcott wrote about strong women who chose several different paths in life.

I really enjoyed the first half. The second half was a little too difficult for me to get through (too "mushy" for me). I am currently on page 332 (I was not able to finish the book before I had to return it to the library). I plan to finish reading the book, but it will have to wait until I can check it out from the library again.
