Actually, I think I prefer Alcott's lesser-known books for young readers, such as EIGHT COUSINS (which I owned as child, tho had only abridged edition of LITTLE WOMEN), JACK & JILL, LITTLE MEN, JO'S BOYS and OLD-FASHIONED GIRL.

Understanding of the Alcotts & their notable neighbors might be gained from reading early titles in 1960's series about the Hall family (excentric residents of Concord, Mass. which includes Uncle Freddie, who is authority on Emerson and Thoreau and is professor at Concord

I have always wanted to read this book and the PBS Great American Read inspired me to finally read it and I was not disappointed. There is much more to the characters than I saw in the movie productions I have watched. I can see where this book has passed the test of time. Alcott wrote about strong women who chose several different paths in life.

I really enjoyed the first half. The second half was a little too difficult for me to get through (too "mushy" for me). I am currently on page 332 (I was not able to finish the book before I had to return it to the library). I plan to finish reading the book, but it will have to wait until I can check it out from the library again. ...more
