I listened to the audiobook of this one, and I loved it. I usually just listen a little at a time when I'm doing other things, but I made it a point to listen to this one, and I finished it in just a few days time. There are a lot of layers here -- race and culture, family secrets, parental expectations, feelings that people don't share with others, and a mystery about what happened to the main character. The narrator was great.

Really good debut novel. I look forward to more of her work. I liked how the perspective kept flipping to different characters without being obvious.

I am not even sure it deserves 3 stars ...
The book opens up with the death of the teen daughter in a family. The book lays out why / how the daughter has died. I found the why's and how's incredibly frustrating. I would have to "spoil" the story to explain further; so I will leave it alone. Just one thing ... to me the worst thing the parents did was to not notice the individuality of any of their kids. But they weren't terrible people, just flawed and with baggage, most of us are. ...more

VERY interesting story of how one man's experience of racism has affected his whole life, and that of his children. In addition, his wife experienced sexism her whole life (this is a story from the 60s) and it affected her relationship with her husband as well her children. This is that story...and how these issues related to the death of their oldest daughter (this is not a spoiler, it is right on the back of the book and is the first sentence of the book).

Great start to a novel....I just wanted more information and didn't get it. Good characters with a unique point of view in the 1970s. Liked it but didn't love it.

Devastating. Reminded me of The house of Sand and Fog in it's sense of dread and unspoken anxiety. Amazing writing and I wept thru the last 1/2 of the book. Oh My! I need a nap after finishing the book.
