My mom really likes the leCarre novels, but I'm like "WHERE IS THE ACTION?!" Quit talking about missions and adventure and actually have one. It's like all the action was 50 years ago and I only get to hear about it after the fact. I need more Mitch Rapp and less Jason Bourne. Go kill someone in the dead of night or capture a bad guy by overtaking his raft in the Thames. Blow up a car or two. Get a bad guy to eat poison in a canape at a fancy party. But don't just spend 200 pages sitting on park ...more

You know those books that everyone tells you is a masterpiece but when you get to it, you get an overwhelming sense of disappointment? Well, this is not one of them. By turns bleak, dark and tension filled this is a densely plotted novel full of brilliant characterisation and dialogue. The plotting is exquisite with twists and turns and a total absence of cliche. It is compelling, beguiling and breathlessly exciting.

"A book recommended by someone else taking the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge." I enjoyed this so much more than the first one I read by John le Carre. This was very well written, but also includes the stifling politics of the time (1960's East Berlin). Interesting and a quick read. ...more
