What a tome! I do think that if I'd read this 10 years ago, it would have been a five star read for me. The historical fiction aspect was wonderful - the author did an excellent job of portraying both the refined avenues of high society London as well as the grimiest gutters. The characters were also complex, fleshed-out beings who came alive on the page! I do think the book was longer than it needed to be - I wish the Mrs. Fox/Henry Rackham storyline had been cut, which would've reduced the pag ...more

I’m afraid I give up. Almost halfway through and nothing of interest has happened, I’ve resorted to reading reviews to see if it improves. The almost unanimous answer by those in a similar boat to me, is that it doesn’t.

I’m disappointed; the beginning of this book was so promising, I was swept into the story by the narrator and tricked into believing these characters lives would interest me. I loved the historical detail, I felt present in many scenes as they were described so richly. However, a
