The white man comes and things fall apart. Okonkwo, hindered by his own beliefs in the ancient ways of the clan - good and bad - in the end, tries to save his clan by resorting to war. While Mr. Brown is portrayed as the good white missionary who tried to lead Umuofia into the 20th c. by creating a government and schools in addition to spreading the Anglo-Christian faith, his successor, the intolerant Mr. Smith, leads the clan to ultimate destruction.
