I loved the way this book was written. I was a little confused at first but picked up after a few chapters. This book made me want to go back and do some research and really try to understand history that I may have learned and didn't understand while in school. I really did not like Bertrand's character and I completely agree with her decisions near the end of the book but loved her daughter Zoe's character. Now onto the movie! ...more

I was completely riveted by Sarah's story in this book. It's a story that is so heartbreaking that you wish it was completely fiction, but these events really happened to people (even if not exactly in this way down to the precise detail) and it's important to know that and never forget. A very difficult subject matter to deal with, and to read about, this turned out to be an excellent story. It taught me a lot of history about the holocaust that I did not know ... about the French involvement in it. A heartbreaking story of a young Jewish girl and her family, intertwining with an American turned French journalist.

Wow, this is one of those rare books that will stay with you for a long long time. Not a pleasant subject matter, but very well written, informative, and gripping. I can't imagine what it was like as a parent during that time, living in constant fear and not knowing if you'd ever see your child again. Remember, never forget. ...more

An intriguing story about the life of a girl who locks her brother in a cupboard during the French round-up of Jews, thinking that she will be back shortly to release him. The story shows how greatly that one choice affects the rest of her life.
