What Members Thought

For this year's French February reading project I decided to search out a couple of examples of contemporary French literature. First up: Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. And what a hidden gem this turned out to be!
This is not your typical Holocaust novel. Instead, it focuses on the local impact of an isolated incident in the larger picture of Nazi barbarism: the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup of July 1942. The story of a family of Polish Jews living in Paris and experiencing firsthand the horrors of that ...more

While I've read many other books about the Holocaust, this was the first I've read that revealed a portrait of France under German occupation. At halfway through, I felt the two stories of the book are just starting to intertwine and I have more interest in Sarah's story and the details of 1942 than the modern day American journalist, Julia, and her story. The silence surrounding the French Police roundup of Jews is striking to me - it's no wonder so few people had heard of it until this novel.

Really 3.5 stars ... but that is not an option.
I liked a lot about this story. The way it went between 1942 and the present was really interesting. The two story lines compelling. It was almost like when the 1942 story became too intense - you had the current day story to keep you going. What I didn't like was much of the current day story line did not ring true to me. If that had been the only story line - I don't think I would have liked the book at all. Also, I really never understood the way ...more

It was pretty hard to put this book down, and I feel liked I whipped through the 300 pages. The first part of the book jumps back and forth from a journalist's investigation of French involvement of the Holocaust and a young girl's story during a historical event. Although a few things seemed predictable (and I can't elaborate without spoilers) it was a good historical fiction book with a different story.

A very moving story about a young Jewish girl who was living in Paris with her family during WWII. French police were involved in the round-up of all the Jews and their trasportation to Nazi hands. The story of Sarah and her efforts to reunite herself with her brother is told alongside the story of the current owner and family who occupies the Paris apartment.

I had no knowledge of the historical events that form the basis of this story before reading Sarah's Key. The author did a wonderful job of weaving the modern narrative and the history together.
