What a magical (in multiple senses), captivating, engrossing, lyrical, poetic, superbly-written delight! 25 stars for this gem! I have not been so thrilled with a story since I read “I Capture the Castle.” I am now a total convert to the writings of Jo Walton, and plan to catch up on all I have unfortunately missed.

Mori Phelps might be my new favorite literary character. I wish I'd read this 20 years ago when I needed to see more of myself in the books I read, but I'm glad this is part of my reading life even now. This book is a love letter to the power of books and literature in a reader's life, and Mori is a complex and compelling main character. She's dealt with a lot of trauma and grief, but while it's hardened her, she still looks for the right connections with kindred spirits that cross her path.

One of these days I will remember that I don't care for magical realism in the slightest. I confess I didn't finish this book... it was all just too much for me. Having the main character be a bookworm was a good idea, but I confess that I'm a bit too young for the era she's reading, and besides it comes across as entirely too much geek nostalgia, which although I am a geek I don't care for (See: Ready Player One). There is also a disturbing interraction between Mori and her father (view spoiler

Every once in awhile I find a book that deserves more than five stars, this is one. This was impossible to put down. Normally I cringe with a diary format, but I really felt like I had found the journal of someone just like me on a bench somewhere and read her private thoughts. Now, I did not grow up on SciFi or fantasy books, but I was (am)an avid reader so this spoke to me. I know it is not the book for everyone, but those that it reaches will leave a lasting impression on them for all time.
