3.5 stars. When I read the film reviews, I thought that Inherent Vice sounded like a mash-up of Philip Marlowe meets The Dude.
But after reading this nostalgic ode to a gentler, pre-Manson time, I was put in mind more of Steinbeck's two sentimental tales of his friend Ed Ricketts in Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday.
Maybe it was the moniker Doc bestowed on both characters. Also the way the small California towns themselves were major characters. Not the best luck with the ladies. And a cast of i ...more

I'm a Los Angeleno. I've been around this sprawl of a town ever since moving here with my family in October of 1968.
