Bel Canto...so hard to engage, but then about 80 pages in, the delicate diplomacy of the interpreter Gen won me over. Patchett’s insight for the role, position, taboos, stigmata, and invisibility of an interpreter was impressive. The ability she has for helping us understand the psychology behind the mindsets of terrorist and hostage as time progresses is at once artistic, beautiful, and tragic. I loved it. I thought I would have to understand and love opera to like this book- hmmm. Until this story helped me to understand it as an interesting libretto. The next opera I’ll try with the music and actors.
