What an amazing book. First of all, it's about a golem and a jinni ... fantasty creatures, which give the book an "other-worldly" essence. Then, it's set in New York City during a time of major immigration, and gives us a realistic view of society there at that time. And amidst all this mixture of reality and fantasy, the book poses questions that are really interesting to contemplate: creation, gender roles, purpose in life, inherent characteristics (can we change them). This was so good! Two very different beings meet and entwine in New York City, the golem from Jewish folklore and the jinni from Arabic folklore. Chava (the golem) and Ahmad (the jinni) find themselves in New York City due to forces and circumstances that they had no control over.
