Lazy days on the branches of a pomegranate tree, Westerns on movie nights, and warm blankets on Winter days - the first few chapters were peaceful and slow but had many signs of the chaos that was to come.

It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even in a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime.

This is quite an amazing book. It is not at all the genre of books I usually enjoy, but this one kept me interested to the very end. A story of a horrible life, sharing many pictures of life in Afghanistan over the past 30 years ... but with many of the same issues we face every day: love, pain, guilt, forgiveness. A truly beautifully written story, that I would recommend to anyone.

This is the best piece of modern fiction I've read recently. The story is compelling and the characters are well established. I had to stop myself from audibly responding to their actions or situations several times. The plot is layered with well-disguised foreshadowing, and thought-provoking irony. I could smell the tea and taste the naan. ...more
