I'm having trouble on this one. I was really put off by the voice and the (preciousness?) on the first few pages.

I put it down for awhile, but will try again. I'm very interested in the region (I lived in the Middle East for two years), and curious what everyone loves about the book, too.

The story follows Amir, a young Afghan boy, along with his father and their two servants.

This book was frustrating. The characters were smart but very flawed, resulting in almost interminable [unnecessary] drama. But people don't always do the "right" thing, or the smart thing, and I think the author does a good job with this. It's easy to have a protagonist who always does the right thing, seeks the quickest path to redemption and whom everybody loves. That is not Amir.

This book brought to light how truly horrifying war and conflict can be across generations in Afghanistan. It is a candid tale and the author does not shy away from telling stories of tragedy and of childhood innocence lost.
