This book follows a young Japanese girl from the age of 8 to 80, relating her experiences as she transitions from poverty-stricken child to Geisha. The author provides a distinctive narrative voice and a captivating view into early 20th century Japan.

There are arch enemies, drama, romance, hopeless hope, foolish youth and jaded elders. What kept me most engaged was continual snippets into the life of a Geisha and their role in Japanese society. At the end I began feeling that it had dragged on ...more
