Anglou's tale is a stark retelling of a life so foreign to my own as to almost make me feel like I was reading a fantasy novel rather than an autobiography. And yet, this is what literature is for--to allow us to live in the skin of another, even for a few hundred pages. I will never truly understand what it was to grow up poor, black, and female in the depression-ridden south, but thanks to books like this, I can have an inkling.

This was difficult as an audiobook because of the cadence of her speech. It felt as though she was a bit detached from the subject, or else that is just because some of the themes are so very difficult. I can see why this is on the core list of books for the 1,001 books to read before you die challenge. But I also had difficulty the first couple of times I tried to read this one as the pacing is cumbersome for me.
