What Members Thought

Ursula is given life after life. In an attempt to cause different future outcomes, she changes by taking fate into her own hands. I loved the British-ness of this book. The details of Fox Corner and the Todds' family life were particularly enjoyable for me. I also liked the historical perspective. But, heavens, did it have to be so long?

Living the same life over and over. Normally I would not enjoy this type of book, the idea that one can learn from a life lived and relive that life with the lessons learned in the previous life. But as Ursula relived and changed based on her memories, I became increaslingly interested and involved in anticipating each new life.

I tried hard to really like this book … but it just wasn’t for me. The concept – repeating life until you get it right is interesting. I thought it would be a main character correcting her mistakes – not happenstance of accidents not happening, etc. We all think about “what if’s” with different key moments in our lives – but for every action there is a reaction. The book was well written and I hung in until the end – just not my cup of tea.

It is really hard to describe this book in a way that seems appealing. "You've got to read this book -- the main character dies over and over again!" But Life After Life is on many Best of 2013 lists, and deservedly so. I've read Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books but this one is such a departure. Very clever. It was a great last book of 2013/first book of 2014 for me.
