This was my second time reading this, I read it back when it first came out and remembered loving it and the importance of the word crocus, but not much more. It was absolutely worth the reread. It's such a sweeping story, covering generations and social movements and religions and gender and romance and war and a zillion other things. You have to marvel at the amount of research that must have gone into this book, but the story doesn't get lost in those details. It's a beautiful book, and very ...more

What a treat to read a book so brilliantly written (love Eugenides' metaphors and conversational style) and so knowledgeable about context -- the history and cultures that affect the novel's vivid characters and their fates. I don't usually care for this quasi-magical realism type of story. Callie's family are characterizations, especially as they age. I picked this book up at a used book store, not realizing it was part of Oprah's Book Club. It is a very touching coming-of-age story. Eugenides does a great job at exploring the universal implications of sex and gender. ...more
