The second of the Kingsbridge series by Follett -- a gripping epic. The epic opens with four young children observing an event in the forest. We follow those four, their families, and others in the community as they mature, marry, join religious communities, and develop into skilled leaders. The epic ends with a crucial episode that ties back to the event in the forest when the four were children.

Highly recommend.

When I found out that the setting of this book was in England in the 1300s, I immediately thought that I would not care for it. I decided to give it a shot because I had already read another book written by Ken Follett. I was pleasantly surprised because this book was very engaging from the start! I am doing the 2015 Reading Challenge and this was the first book for that. The category was a book over 500 pages and since this one has slightly over 1,000 pages, it definitely qualifies!

This is the sequel to Pillars of the Earth and I liked it just as much as the first one. It is set 200 years after the original and takes place in the same town. The description of life back then is really interesting and makes you even more thankful for our modern comfort and conveniences!
