I would probably give this 3.5 stars. I really feel like after finishing, I should have received a medal or something. I have never read (or finished) a book with SUCH a slow start. Page 300 was where it really started picking up, but I know a lot of people abandoned it way before this point. I think you have to really dispel all the Harry Potter notions Rowling has built up in us. You can't even compare, because this book really threw down the fancy teenage PG-13 crap and displayed some purely R-Rated Adult ideas and characters. As I too have fallen victim of Harry Potter magic at one point in my life, I must admit that I had certain expectations from this book. Well, my expectations dissipated soon enough - with the couple of first pages into the Pagford (un)fortunate events - and the first thing that came to my mind was that this book would have never been published if it was written by anyone else but Rowling, who - let's be honest - has an enormous credit with publishers being the mother of the most popular magician
