What Members Thought

It’s a story of two teenagers falling in love and dying of cancer.
Not the sort of book I would get near unless someone had a gun to the head of my dog, and even then I’d consider the virtues of a new puppy.
But I’d heard it was good and I have a tendency to read the first paragraph, or at least the first sentence of any book. So as I passed by the display at the Barnes and Noble I picked it up and read the first sentence. A little long, but good — good enough to get me to read the first page. I ...more

I didn't love it, but I enjoyed it. The dialog between Augustus and Hazel; the way their friendship evolved; their strength and their wit - I liked all of that. The author took a difficult subject and managed to have it evoke compassion without pity. I can just summarize this book by the saying:
"That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives... as though you didn't just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback." by Anonymous

Absolutely amazing.... I laughed at the intelligent humor, I was impressed with the language, I bawled at the storyline. It's Romeo and Juliet told in the modern age; Shakespeare's fictional unsupportive parents are replaced by a very nonfictional unsupportive universe in which cancer lives, breathes, and destroys. The love story is beautifully young and innocent, but nonetheless features a maturity not seen by characters four times as old as Gus and Hazel. Read this book -- every last page of i
