It’s a story of two teenagers falling in love and dying of cancer.

Not the sort of book I would get near unless someone had a gun to the head of my dog, and even then I’d consider the virtues of a new puppy.

But I’d heard it was good and I have a tendency to read the first paragraph, or at least the first sentence of any book. So as I passed by the display at the Barnes and Noble I picked it up and read the first sentence. A little long, but good — good enough to get me to read the first page. I

I didn't love it, but I enjoyed it. The dialog between Augustus and Hazel; the way their friendship evolved; their strength and their wit - I liked all of that. The author took a difficult subject and managed to have it evoke compassion without pity. These two strong young people faced terminal cancer with such courage, and such determination to live every minute that they were alive to the fullest.

Absolutely amazing.... I laughed at the intelligent humor, I was impressed with the language, I bawled at the storyline. It's Romeo and Juliet told in the modern age; Shakespeare's fictional unsupportive parents are replaced by a very nonfictional unsupportive universe in which cancer lives, breathes, and destroys. The love story is beautifully young and innocent, but nonetheless features a maturity not seen by characters four times as old as Gus and Hazel. Read this book -- every last page of i ...more
