One shouldn't expect a happy ending when reading a book about two teenagers with a terminal illness falling in love. Regardless, I don't recommend reading this in public.
It's a coming of age tale, sped up by the potential of a short life. A look into the thoughts and feelings of people who feel the end near, thus focus on the things which are important to them. Perhaps it is a bit fantastical to think that the characters can be this open, honest, realistic, intelligent, kind. Perhaps the authors intention was not to make these characters realistic – but characters we strive to become or to provide some insight. It was hard to read – but I appreciated the journey. Reading the book as an adult, I especially loved Hazel’s parents.

An incredibly powerful story of hope and love and loss, and gain. Because it's all about what they gained, in the end - each other.

So many feels. Though I can't imagine any 17 year olds who talk like this. Maybe because the threat of dying is so close at hand that you can't help but think existentially? I could barely understand what they were talking about. Saw the biggest saddest twist coming a mile away. The smaller twist caught me by surprise.
