Clary has no idea that her night out with Simon is going to be the night that everything changes. Pushing Clary into a world she knows nothing about when she witnesses the death of a demon. Clary is shoved into a world where stuff of nightmares walks the earth, while humans are oblivious to their very existence. Shadowhunters have long protected the humans from the humans so they are equally shocked to encounter a mundane that can see them.

When her mother is suddenly taken from her she sets out to find the strangers whom only she can see and save her mother. Clary is sucked into the world her mother has worked hard to protect her from, learning that her mother has kept secrets about herself, her father and who she really is. As Clary uncovers more truths she sets out to find the mortal cup hoping to trade it for her mother but when it’s taken from her by someone she can trust. When an old friend steps in to help save her mother they will head into battle risking it all only to learn that some long buried secrets are still out there waiting to be discovered.

I like Clary she wants to find her mom even if it means risking her own life. She’s a strong passionate character with lots of potential to grow into someone amazing. The author did an awesome job creating characters that are easy to connect with, who you either just love or just hate their guts. I know I have a few in the book I wanted to see killed off. However that’s what makes a good book if it was all happy and easy the story the characters would be boring. I like the idea of Simon as a potential guy for Clary he’s been there for her when she needs him even if he is just a mundane. Clary is kick ass on her own she which I also enjoy, fighting demons and taking numbers. I'm looking forward to reading more of Clary’s story and seeing how she turns out when it’s all said and done.

I knew it was time to join the masses and check out City of Bones. It doesn't help that its movie is due out in just a week either or that my hubby said I’d never read it. Ironically we are both reading the book at the same time. I love that the author created a world where humans as well as things that go bump in the night live together. The concept for the Shadowhunters is new and exciting, the way that they use their weapons or runes to living in an alternate world. A truly unique idea that creates an intricately woven story filled with mystery, romance, action and twists that keep you guessing till the end. City of Bones is beautiful written it tells the story of Clary in a way that you feel like your right there with her experiencing everything she does. I had a hard time putting City of Bones down, I actually stayed up late reading only to pass out and finish the next morning. I also felt like I could ramble all day writing this review so I tried really hard to keep all the spoilers out. With great characters, a fantastic story it’s no wonder there is so much love for the mortal instruments series. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series, plus can’t wait for the movie. ...more

REREAD IN 2021: I have forgotten most of the scenes and rereading the book helped refresh my memory. More thoughts to come.

First read in 2009 thinking it was a trilogy, I re-read the whole series except number 6, not yet published. 1-5 I finished in a week! Good quick easy entertaining reads. Had to refresh my memory before watching the film. I really like this world and love the story though it is possibly, slightly dragged out.
As much as I admire Clary and Jace's incredible love, I think we are all just waiting for them to get it on! I know this is a young adult read and I am a parent too, but really, are there m ...more

I was really sceptical about this book when I began reading it. Although it had been recommended by a fairly reliable friend I was worried that it would be just another soppy tween romance. I discovered fairly quickly that it was much better than I had expected. Most of that characters have more than one layer and I found myself completely drawn into the world. Starring the girl who reads. Ugh. The author is obvious, the characters are beyond irritating, and the plot is ridiculous. All of these characters speak in the same voice. Clary shows no personality. Boys love Clary's non-personality. Girls are evil. These names are awful.

It's painful to read for those reasons and more, but I guess it's hate-readable, if that's your thing.

Love this book. Cassandra Clare does not disappoint! I always enjoy her books. This book captivates you and before you know it you read through the whole book and cant wait to read the second.
