I'm really glad that I started out with Clare's other series (The Infernal devices) because this one would have turned me off. It's a first novel, and it reads like one.

Clare famously got her start as a Harry Potter fanfiction writer, and I remember reading and enjoying her stories back in the day. Unfortunately, that is coloring my perception of this book. Brilliant! I absolutely love this series, I started reading it when it was still a trilogy, the last book (then) had yet to come out. Since then Clare has extended the series past the three books originally intended. That being said, this was a book I had seen a lot and walked by. Then it was proposed for book club and I got it on sale, not wanting to spend full price on something I wasn't sure I was going to like. I immediately ran out and got the second one upon finishing this one.

I had never heard of this series until the movie started being advertised. It looked interesting so I decided to read the book before the movie comes out. It was fun, and had some differences from other YA books I've read (and a lot of similarities). I was surprised by one thing that happened for sure. I'm interested in seeing how the series turns out. This is a good choice if you're just looking for something fun to read. ...more
