I've read many books on wwII but somehow this author managed to present me with vastly different perspectives. I was constantly dazzled and charmed by the beauty of the sentences in this book. Stunned by the depth of detail. I loved this book so much that halfway through I slowed down so that I could savour the experience and delay the inevitable ending. My friends are all complaining that I've told them to read this too many times already. Lol. Alas. I've finished it today but I suspect that I' ...more

The story revolves around French blind girl Marie , German orphan Werner Pfenning , Traumatised veteran Etienne Leblanc ,Marie's uncle and officer who is searching for the blue diamond in Marie's possession.The book is written in short chapters relating these characters and at the end these pieces assemble together to form a meaningful story.There is a precious blue diamond, legend says the one who possesses it never dies,but curses everyone around to endless misfortune. Beautiful imagery and juxtaposition. Doerr does a masterful job of creating a sympathetic character who happened to advance the Nazi war effort, and his counterpart.
