What Members Thought

I struggled to read the last half of this 530-page book. The extremely short chapters were like being inside the mind of an author with ADD. I lost focus repeatedly. I feel as though I have just lived with Marie-Laure and with Werner while reading this bittersweet tale. There is nothing that I can say that others have not already said about this book except, perhaps, that it called to my mind growing up in West Germany in the early 1970s in the aftermath of World War II. You would think that 25 years would be enough time to fade the evidence of a world torn apart, but it wasn't. Now perhaps?

Beautifully written. Seamlessly moves between voices and points in time, never confusing the reader. Characters with depth and a realness to them which is rare. People to love and want to protect, people to hate but still not abhor.
Brilliant. Would recommend whole heartedly.
